My older sibling was in high school, I was in junior high. The song on the radio was U2’s New Year’s Day. The year was either 1985 or 1986. I was sitting around in a small grassy area with friends after school one day and we just hung out and listened to music, having no clue what we would have to deal with when we became adults.
I remember my best friend at that time. We use to play every day, have sleep overs, build stuff, catch animals, burn down a garage, fight for our lives, and eventually part ways as our interests deviated and life changed (maybe it progresses, maybe it sort of refressed).
When the song was playing I started thinking back to those times. The song is in the iTunes list among 1,669 songs that might play in party shuffle mode.
I had some crappy boom box, back in the Run-DMC rap era. I would listen to the same stations as my older sibling, and on one of the stations the U2 song played, a lot. Back in the ’80s it wasn’t unusual for a radio station to burn out a song by playing it 10-20 times in a day. Most of the songs from that time I don’t remember, but this one I do.
While we were in front of a public pool area, we sat in a circular island covered with grass. There were rarely cars driving by because the townhome complex didn’t have through streets, so mostly just residents and their friends/family drove around. I’m not sure what we were talking about, but it might have been something about a couple girls that I liked. One of the girls actually agreed to “go out” with me, though it was because she thought I was “funny and nice”, which I remember to this day. Though now I would gladly accept a girl wanting to go out with me because of those attributes, when I was younger (and pudgy), it wasn’t something I would have taken as a compliment.
As an aside, I met up with that young lady in late August and see her on occassion, she’ married and still as gorgeous as ever. And if she’s reading this, “Hi Christy!”.
